Cold Temptation
At my peak, I could drink four bottles a day without even thinking twice.
For someone who loved Pepsi like my survival depended on it, giving it up for 365 days felt almost impossible.
I started my no-soda journey in January. I am 99 days in, but Easter at my parents’ house almost ended it.
Pepsi is the family drink. It is something deeply rooted and accepted without question, thanks to my parents. At my peak, I could drink four bottles a day without even thinking twice.
On days I craved it badly, I would buy two bottles. One would be frozen solid, what my family calls a “mortuary standard,” and the other chilled. I would drink from the mortuary standard one, then pour the chilled drink into it and give it a little time to marinate before taking another sip. It was unbelievably satisfying.
Going from that habit to stopping completely has not been easy. The first 95 days were challenging, but nothing tested me like Easter Monday.
I opened the freezer to get a sachet of water, and there they unexpectedly were. At least twelve bottles of chilled Pepsi, cold, waiting, and staring at me. I shut the freezer immediately. In the 30 seconds that followed, I argued with myself harder than I had in weeks, citing reasons not to give in.
Just one will not hurt.
You have come too far to start again.
Ninety-six days of discipline was about to go down the drain because of a single moment. I walked away from the freezer, forced myself to think about something else, and then went back to get the water I wanted. That simple decision might be the hardest one I have made this year.
As simple as it sounds, it taught me something about resolve. It showed me how quickly we negotiate with ourselves and how quietly temptation arrives. It does not always come loudly. Sometimes, it just sits there, cold, waiting, and staring.
After that moment, I began to notice Pepsi everywhere. It felt almost intentional. I found it amusing, but it also reminded me of something important. Once you decide to change, the world will keep testing that decision. And that is what makes life, life.

I haven’t intentionally gone on a soda fast recently, but tell me why this is so relatable on so many levels? 🤣
Very relatable. That's how I was tempted two times in a row by someone I vowed to myself not to eat from. The first one was a full meal with chicken. I almost removed the chicken to eat, but guess who later got chicken in her meal that night? Meeee.
Just look at that.
